Dramatic Mammatus storm clouds passed over Gariwerd and Ararat this morning! The wind was powerful, storm clouds were was swirling, the rain was falling all making the light change so quickly. Mammatus clouds form in sinking air. As the air descends, the water in the air evaporates. Under certain atmospheric conditions, this evaporation causes an increased downward movement of air, which drags the cloud down with it. The result of this is sagging pouches or bulges from the underside of a cloud. This is a wide-angle shot of the sky with Gariwerd / Grampians National Park on the horizon. Normally I'm up before the sun each morning though slept in today and about a minute before I captured this image there was some brilliant lightning. Wishing I had of arrived just that bit earlier though grateful I was able to capture this image.
