As kids, we find the pale brown split shells discarded by cicadas and we often think of them that way. Their chorus at dusk is unforgettable, but because of those childhood memories, the brilliant colours come as a surprise. When we really look, insects are beautiful. Starting with several photos that I took myself as reference material, I layered colour upon colour to create the soft, grey-green atmosphere of the Australian bush. The cicada itself was yet more layers, finally using metallic paint to bring the shining jewel tones and translucent wings to life.
