This is a portrait of a dying male paperbark flower, painted on a massive scale. Most of us think of the tree itself with the layers of fine, creamy bark reminiscent of pages, or the creamy white bottlebrushes that are the female flower. The male flowers are tiny, only a centimetre and a half in diameter and much duller in comparison. This one has lost it's threadlike petals and unlike the female flowers that go on to produce seeds, there will be nothing more. But there is the hope that there will be more beautiful paperbark trees. Because it existed. I wanted to give this strange and unlikely flower a presence and a significance that it never had to the human eye in life. Beauty is everywhere, even here.
