Greg O'Toole is a realist painter trained in classical techniques. His practice involves painting portraits, landscapes and commissioned based work. Greg was drawn to the classical technique through experimentation with emotive and figurative painting in his early career. Looking to use figures and portraits as a way to express more intuitive and unconscious thoughts and feelings, he began to pursue a mastery of technical proficiency so as to be unbound by his limited knowledge of anatomy, proportion and perspective.
Studying from resources found online and through books such as Solomon J Solomon’s “The practice of oil painting and drawing”, Greg eventually went through an Atelier style mentorship program with artist Scott Waddell, a former instructor at the famed Grand Central Academy in New York.
Through the process of learning, Greg found an appreciation for the storytelling qualities inherent in representational art and has since been working to bring these ideas into his work.
Greg has exhibited in many group shows, scholarship exhibitions and competitions around Australia. He also is passionate about sharing his knowledge through private or group tuition.
