Common questions and answers for artists

Faqs for Artists

Q: How much commission does GalleryGift charge and who sets the price?

A: There is are no other charges at all for artists but when a piece sells or is commissioned, GalleryGift keeps 20% commission, plus 10% GST from the sale price that you set. The remaining amount is what you will receive in your hand once the piece sells. The buyer pays for packaging and delivery.

The commission is charged using the industry standards formula and we have kept it as low as we can while still being able to function as a business!

Q: When do I get paid?

A: Buyers have 7 days from the time they receive the artwork, to decide if they want to keep it or return it. If, after the 7 days we haven't heard from them, it is considered sold and we will then deposit your payment into your account within the following 7 days.

Q: What sort of art can I sell on GalleryGift?

A: GalleryGift only accepts high quality, original, handmade artworks or limited editions of prints, artistic photography, reproductions and digital art. Each application is considered on a case by case basis as to the suitability of the work for GalleryGift but having a look through our online gallery to see what sort of work is already for sale is a great way to get an overview.

We are selective in the type of work we want on GalleryGift but also like to have a large variety of styles, mediums and subjects (you can see what mediums we list by checking the search bar of our gallery page here). In contrast to other galleries, who’s main focus may be on pushing the boundaries of contemporary art and appealing to art investors and collectors, we want artwork that is popular amongst the general public, suitable for gifts and not necessarily too risqué but we also like artwork that excites people as well.

We do not accept clothing, unlimited prints/reproductions/photographs, or any pieces of an unlimited supply. We also don't accept work that could be deemed offensive to some customers.

Q: Can I have an artwork for sale on GalleryGift while it is also for sale elsewhere?

A: Yes you can. We didn't want to restrict you from exhibiting your art in different locations but if it sells elsewhere you must immediately put it on hold by going to the Artworks section of your Artist Profile, ticking the box of the relevant piece and selecting Hold. Once it is 100% confirmed that it is sold (e.g. picked up), you can select Remove to delete it or change it to be in your Portfolio rather than Artworks for Sale.

This is to overcome the possibility of upsetting our customers if they purchase a piece on GalleryGift and then find out it is no longer for sale. We also ask that the same piece is not sold elsewhere for a lower sale price than on GalleryGift at any point so that we can maintain the trust with our customers.

Q: Can I sell my art on a site like Red Bubble as well as GalleryGift?

A: At GalleryGift, our mission is making original art something for everyone, so every person can own a one-off, unique, hand-made or limited edition artwork and allowing artists to sell more of their originals. It's very important to us that our customers feel that they own something really special and not something that potentially thousands of other people also have. For this reason, if you have an artwork/design on a site like Red Bubble that can mass produce products using that artwork/design, it is not welcome on GalleryGift.

Q: Why do you screen the artwork before it is posted publicly for sale?

A: At GalleryGift we want to uphold a very high standard in the work we are selling. Some of our customers may actually know very little about art but this way they only have to browse through artwork that is of great quality and can buy in confidence knowing that it has been hand selected by a panel of experienced art critics.

Q: Does the artwork have to be done by me?

A: Yes. By using the services of GalleryGift as an artist you must agree to our terms and conditions which state that you are the creator of all artworks that you upload for your artist application and for sale.

Q: What exactly does original mean in terms of artwork?

A: GalleryGift artists are required to only list “original” artworks or limited reproductions of their own artworks that THEY have had printed and signed themselves. This means that the artwork must have been created by the artist’s own hand and from his or her own thoughts and references. Copyright in art is a complex area and for more information you can go here and here.

Q: You don't have watermarks on the artworks, what are you doing to protect artists work from being copied?

A: This was a tricky one to be honest- we want to do all we can to protect artists work but also find watermarks very distracting, making it difficult to appreciate the artwork sometimes. If artists all had different watermarks on the artworks in Our Gallery, it could be particularly distracting as you can probably imagine. We also know that it's very easy for someone to crop a watermark out that's on an edge.

In order to protect the work you upload on GalleryGift without the use of watermarks, we have disabled right click on all images on our site which means no-one can save or download the images. We can't stop people taking a screen shot but that will always be a very low quality image.

Something else to bare in mind, we have no control over your images once we share them on social media, that depends on the terms and conditions of the indiviual platform. By default you agree to allowing us to share your work for promotional means but you will ALWAYS be credited and that is really fantastic exposure for you when we do. Having said that, if you prefer to not have your work shared on social media or have particular pieces that you don't want shared, please just let us know and we will be happy to honour that.

Q: How long can the artwork stay for sale on the site?

A: Once uploaded, an artwork can be for sale on the site for up to one year, after that it will be removed by admin.

Q: How do I know when an artwork has sold and what do I need to do if it has?

A: You will be able to see it in the “Artist Orders” section of your profile and you will also receive a notification from GalleryGift via email. Included in the email will be a Certificate of Authenticity which you will need to complete, sign and date and include with the artwork when you package it. The email will also let you know whether the buyer or a courier will be picking it up (if you allowed this). You will then need to get the piece packaged securely and ready for pickup or delivery.

Q: How do commission orders work?

A: Commissions are an excellent way for customers to spend their vouchers. If they are interested in ordering a commission, the customer will first fill out a commission order form (or may contact you first to discuss) and from there, it will become a negotiation between yourself and the customer with GalleryGift as intermediary, until we reach a point that everyone is happy to move forward.

We are happy to be very flexible in the way you want to work with commissions- whether you want to work personally with the customer or arrange through us only, whether you want a deposit or what you want to do in terms of customer satisfaction of the final piece, with our guidance, we work around how you like to do things, as long as GalleryGift feels it's fair for both artist and customer. Having GalleryGift as a "middle-man/woman" is excellent insurance for both the artist and customer to ensure a smooth and enjoyable commission process for both parties.

Bare in mind that any commissions ordered through GalleryGift will attract the same 20% commission charge as pre-made artwork.

Q: How do I keep track of orders?

A: GalleryGift artists have an "Artist Orders" section where you can keep an eye on any commissions you have been asked to create and any artwork that has sold and which stage it is up to in the sale and delivery process.

Q: What happens if my artwork is damaged in transit?

A: As soon as a customer realises your artwork has been damaged it is up to them to contact GalleryGift to let us know. All artworks under $100.00 are automatically insured during transit. For pieces above $100.00, the customer has the option to add transit cover. If they have added it and the artwork is damaged AND the packaging is deemed sufficient, they will be reimbursed the full price and we would then discuss the wishes of the buyer who may request that you create another piece the same. It would be your choice as to whether you agree to that or not. Packaging is the artists responsibility and if the packaging is deemed insufficient we will not be reimbursed which means we can not pass any payment on to you. If the customer does not add insurance and the artwork is damaged, they will not be reimbursed.

Q: Can I promote my own contact details, website or social media pages on my profile?

A: We wanted to keep customers here on our site so we do not allow artists to display their contact details or promote their own websites or social media pages. Artists and GalleryGift users are all welcome to promote GalleryGift or specific artists and artworks on their own websites or social media pages though! The more people know about GalleryGift the more work we will ultimately sell for you.

Q: What happens if I'm going to be away for a while?

A: If you are going to be in a position where you can not send artworks that are purchased straight away, you will need to put your artworks on hold (in the Artworks section of your Artist Profile). Once you return, you can reactivate your artworks. If you have a lot of artworks you can contact us if you prefer and we will put your artist profile on hold until you let us know that you have returned.

Q: Do I get any special benefits for being a high seller?

A: Artists who consistently sell will be the first ones we look to when choosing artworks to feature on GalleryGift's pages which means great exposure and superior status. We will also often choose the high sellers to be our feature artists and for additional promotion. All this adds up to more sales and a stronger reputation as an artist to invest in!

Q: How long can I be registered as an artist on GalleryGift for?

A: GalleryGift will monitor artists performance annually and as long as you are selling either regularly or high priced pieces occasionally, as well as adhering to our guidelines/terms and conditions, you are welcome to stay on GalleryGift for infinity and a day!
